Regional Simulation Center
For the purpose of implementation of clauses 187 and 188 of the Measures Plan on implementation the State Program of Healthcare Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Salamatty Kazakhstan” for the period of 2011-2015 approved by Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated January 29, 2011 under №41, and in accordance with subclause 31 of clause 16 of the Regulation on Healthcare Ministry of the Republic of Kazakhstan approved by Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated October 28 , 2004, № 117, the Regional Simulation Center was opened in September, 2014 on the basis of Taldykorgan Higher Medical College, where healthcare specialists have training on emergency conditions, assessed on their professional efficiency preparedness and receive confirmation of their qualifications correspondence.
Simulation training of Taldykorgan Higher Medical College is a sort of subdivision, where it is possible to execute testing, certification of practical healthcare specialists as well as to teach students with the help of simulation technologies. Regional Simulation Center consists of 16 rooms, total area is 500 square meters.
Simulation training is related to modern technologies of practical training of specialists in the area of healthcare and paramedics. It is based on modelling of maximally close to real clinical and other situations (including risky ones). It consists of working out practical skills to the degree of automatism, making operational decision, elaboration of communicative skills and team work.
The main aim of the Center’s activities is developing and opening new horizons for practical training, improvement of qualifications and its level assessment among students, doctors and nurses.
Simulation technologies provide significant help to practical healthcare. They help to prepare a highly qualified personnel reserve. Teaching to skills and abilities in various medical areas is executed without any threat for patients. Training with training models, homuncles and virtual simulators is thought to be efficient and safe. A doctor that has had training using medical imitators is allowed to work with patients without any concerns. The possibilities of the modern simulation equipment are quite broad, they give a way to model and practice almost any clinical situation over the course of training.
The Center provides training for:
- specialists with secondary and higher education on additional professional qualification development programs and programs of simulation trainings, workshops, training seminars;
- students of medical college for developing professional skills;
- paramedics (ambulance drivers);
Organization of the Center with the purpose of acquiring professional skills considers a complex approach – teaching from theoretical knowledge to practical activities. The work is oriented towards international experience in the area of innovational technologies.
Simulation training is aimed at not only mastering separate skills by each listener, but also at learning to work as a team, professional behavior and skills of communicating with a patient. For this goal the task is set, and various stages of simulation training are engaged during this task solution.
First stage is instruction. In the form of mini-lectures, the situation is evaluated , the object to be assisted and the goal are defined .
Second stage is the training process itself, in the course of which the learners take care of the patient or provide aid under teacher’s supervision. At the same time, it is important that all team members feel reality of the situation.
Third stage is summarizing the results. The teacher together with students and learners discuss the results of the practice. Debriefing.
Structure of the Centre
The Center has a developed infrastructure. There are lecture halls, debriefing and information technology rooms, training rooms for working out practical skills in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, first and emergency medical care, surgery, therapy, nursing technologies - total area of 500 sq. m.
Material and technical base and methodological support of the educational process
The Center is equipped with wide range of modern phantoms, simulators and training devices, medical items, equipment necessary for working out practical skills.
From high-tech training aids the following ones are available: 2 simulators of cardio-pulmonary patient, interactive childbirth simulator, interactive mannequins of a newborn baby and a child of 6 months old, 1 year old virtual child mannequins, 2 interactive adult mannequins of a patient for resuscitation.
In addition to high-tech models, there are models of newborns, children and adults for mastering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, sets to simulate accidents, simulators for training suturing the skin, simulators for learning basic surgical procedures, drainage of the pleural cavity. The mannequins for teaching students and learners to practical skills of ECG recording, conducting auscultation, electrical defibrillation, gynecological and obstetric examination, all kinds of injections and implementation nursing procedures are purchased .
The rooms are equipped with video control system broadcasting to the debriefing room. The Center has electronic control systems with modern software.
Methodological support is represented by the programs of simulation courses, teaching aids, evaluation tools, methodic recommendations and instructions.
Properly selected staff is one of the key guarantee of successful development of the Simulation Center. When selecting candidates and forming a team, the following qualities and responsibilities of the teaching staff should be taken into account: understanding the basic concept of simulation training, understanding of differences and advantages of different types of simulations, the ability of formation programs of training of separate worked out elements, determination of points of application of simulation training in existing and emerging training programs, development of new scripts, training and guidance of trainees before simulation training, determination the strategy of debriefing and ways to improve its efficiency, conducting debriefing: communicating with a team, ability to explain the mistake, effective correction of mistakes and evaluation of the acquired skills.
Thus, simulation training provides the opportunity for each student to carry out professional activities or their elements in accordance with professional standards and procedures for provision medical care in conditions which are maximum possibly closed to the real working environment.
